Gnathian-style pottery appeared around the middle of the 4th century BC in the southern Italian region of Apulia. It takes its name from the site of Egnazia where the style may have originated, although various centers must have produced this type of pottery. The style is characterized by black-glazed surfaces with polychrome decoration in red, white and yellow comprising mostly floral and bird motifs.

Pendant, African Bust, Black Glass, 2nd half of 2nd C - 1st half of 1st C BC, 13mm, poor form.

cf Spaer: “The head of a Negroid youth with prominent cheekbones and brows, a broad nose, protruding mouth with full lips, tightly curled hair, and a long neck; originally both had a loop on top.” “The Negroid head is remarkable for the mere fact that so many identical pieces are known. The features are detailed and delicate; the color is almost always reported as purple (or violet). In all likelihood, this particular pendant type emanates from one and the same workshop. Another possibility is that the molds stem from a single source.”
